Family Research Council on Courts and Partial-Birth Abortion

WASHINGTON, D.C. - "If doctors and lawyers can testify and listen to the brutalities of abortion without a hint of regret, then the moral corruption of these professions is truly frightening," Family Research Council's Legal Analyst for Sanctity of Human Life Issues Teresa Wagner said Wednesday. "Despite overwhelming public support to outlaw an especially inhumane abortion method, American courts are telling us we cannot protect the human infant in the very process of birth. That is a travesty of justice and a perversion of our Constitution."

On the eve of the 26th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, legalizing abortion, Family Research Council announces the release of a new publication, entitled The Truth in Black and White. This pocket-sized booklet features the often graphic testimonies of abortionists as well as excerpts from court opinions on partial birth abortion bans around the country.

"The purpose of this publication is not to pine over the seeming loss of human feeling within legal and medical circles," Wagner said. "Rather, it is a reminder to all citizens that black robes and white coats do not confer moral authority. The citizenry must assert its sound moral judgment on this issue and reject the barbarity that the legal and medical elites would foist upon us."

A January 1998 Wirthlin poll commissioned by Family Research Council found that 61 percent of Americans believe abortion should not be permitted after signs of life can be detected. The Truth in Black and White excerpts the affidavits of doctors who perform partial-birth abortions as well as other abortion methods. Doctors testify to "disarticulated limbs," "floating heads," and "piece by piece removal of the fetus from the uterus."

"Every form of abortion involves the violent destruction of innocent human beings and is therefore an egregious wrong," said Wagner. "The dismemberment of a child within the womb is as much a violation of a child's human rights as stabbing the child's head when he or she is almost fully outside the womb. This report makes that painfully clear. It is time for the legal and medical professions to return to justice and human decency and recognize abortion for what it is: the violent and unjust destruction of human beings."
